The Steady State Behavior of (μ/μI, λ)-ES on Ellipsoidal Fitness Models Disturbed by Noise

چکیده
The method of differential-geometry is applied for deriving steady state conditions for the (μ/μI , λ)-ES on the general quadratic test function disturbed by fitness noise of constant strength. A new approach for estimating the expected final fitness deviation observed under such conditions is presented. The theoretical results obtained are compared with real ES runs showing a surprisingly excellent agreement.

Design and Management of Complex Technical Processes and Systems by means of Computational Intelligence Methods Predicting the Solution Quality in Noisy Optimization
Noise often occurs in real-world optimization tasks. Although evolution strategies and other evolutionary algorithms are thought to be robust against the effects of noise, even their performance is degraded. Generally, one observes a reduction of the convergence velocity and a deterioration of the final solution quality. There are two local progress measures describing the performance of evolut...

The presence of noise in real-world optimization problems poses difficulties to optimization strategies. It is frequently observed that evolutionary algorithms are quite capable of succeeding in noisy environments. Intuitively, the use of a population of candidate solutions alongside with some implicit or explicit form of averaging inherent in the algorithms is considered responsible. However, ...
متن کاملActuator Noise in Recombinant Evolution Strategies on General Quadratic Fitness Models
This paper addresses the influence of actuator noise on the steady state behavior of multirecombinant evolution strategies (ES) on general quadratic fitness functions. Actuator noise degrades the ES’s ability to locate the global optimizer. After a certain transient time the ES approaches a steady state behavior characterized by an expected fitness deviation from the global optimum. This expect...
متن کاملMutative Self-Adaptation on the Sharp and Parabolic Ridge
In this paper, the behavior of intermediate (μ/μI , λ)-ES with self-adaptation is considered for two classes of ridge functions: the sharp and the parabolic ridge. Using a step-by-step approach to describe the system’s dynamics, we will investigate the underlying causes for the different behavior of the ES on these function types and the effects of intermediate recombination.
